Our Secondhander Spotlight series has showcased DIY lovers, electronics aficionados, collectors, and more - but how does a commercial interior designer approach secondhanding?

Today, we’re finding out! Mid-century modern furniture lovers, this one’s for you. Let’s meet Chamberlain from Charlotte, North Carolina!

Who:

Chamberlain

Where:

Charlotte, NC

Are you more of a buyer, or a seller?

Definitely a buyer! I’m always stalking letgo to find unique pieces to add to my ever-growing collection.

How often do you secondhand?

Literally, all the time. Sometimes I won’t even be looking for anything, but then a gorgeous mid-century modern piece finds me.

Why are you drawn to secondhanding?

I am a commercial interior designer who LOVES mid-century modern pieces. My family members have always passed down mid-century pieces to me and I’ve held on to them forever while building my own collection.

After always being on the move, I bought my 1920’s condo almost two years ago. I was excited to have my own space and make it mine. Secondhanding allowed me to get creative and mix up unique pieces for a really good deal. Using letgo, I found pieces that represent me and my style. I work for a furniture dealer that represents Herman Miller and I am lucky enough to have a few classic Eames pieces in my home. I really enjoy finding steals on letgo to constantly continue to complete my space.

Do you have a favorite find?

The old record player console that I got for $30. I always knew I wanted a record player, but I wanted to buy secondhand to find the right one. So I actually started collecting records way before I even had my record player. Now I just need to hook the speakers up so I can get it going!

Got any tips?

  • If you love something, don’t get rid of it right away. Reuse the piece in a different way by trying it in a different room or placing it in your hallway.

  • Never pay full price for furniture! There’s always a deal out there. Look for brands you love and search by using exact keywords if there’s something specific you’re on the hunt for.

  • After you buy something from a seller on letgo, keep up to date with them. Check out their items and see if they have more items you’ve been wanting. Chances are, you have the same taste and they’ll feel comfortable making the sale to you because they already know you. Build a relationship with them - this is a community, after all!

Thanks again to Chamberlain for sharing your story!
