You never know what you’ll find when you’re secondhanding - or who you’ll meet! In our latest Secondhander Spotlight, we’re talking to a DIY master who built an awe-inspiring outdoor space with her husband using secondhand finds, and scored a few pieces from a truly unexpected seller.

Ready to learn more about this secondhander’s hand-built outdoor oasis? Let’s meet Allie from LA!

Who:

Allie

Where:

Los Angeles, CA

Are you more of a buyer, or a seller?

I’m definitely a buyer, but I have sold a few things as well. I get a thrill out of both. I mostly get a thrill out of negotiating a deal, whether buying or selling. I’m a paralegal, so you could say I’m a natural at it.

How often do you secondhand?

I’m a huge mixture of a builder, design/creator, and a tranquility enthusiast. Growing up, my dad was always building and fixing things. Naturally, I followed him like a little duck learning everything I can. And my mom was always designing spaces, doing estate sales and hitting up thrift stores. As I grew older, I kinda morphed into both of them. I build and fix things along with designing to create a calm and peaceful place for friends and family to hang out.

We recently bought deck floor panels off of letgo, which were originally $12,000, and we only paid $2000 for it. My dad and I built out the deck ourselves and it was a huge project, but super rewarding. My mom then helped me style it to turn it into exactly what I was going for. It feels like my own and it’s the best.

Why are you drawn to secondhanding?

I was raised off of secondhand shopping. I love knowing that someone enjoyed a particular piece at some point and now it’s mine to enjoy.

It’s nice to think that I’ll be able to pass a piece on to another secondhander. It’s like a circle of life, but for materials and rad furniture.

Do you have a favorite find?

I have so many amazing finds, but my favorite is a kind of a long story.

Here’s the short version: my husband and I were renovating our backyard and I really wanted rattan and wicker furniture in a blonde wood color. Luckily, while browsing letgo I came across a 3- piece set that was perfect and I knew it was amazing quality.

Once I picked it up and took it home, practicing social distancing of course, I knew the brand and noticed it was very expensive. Just one seat was originally $1700, and I paid $500 for all three.  The find was amazing but the coolest part is...I bought it from Topher and Ashley Grace. (That 70’s Show and Gossip Girl fans will squeal with me.) They were so sweet!

Got any tips?

Be patient. Just because you search one day and can’t find what you’re looking for, doesn’t mean it can’t be posted tomorrow.

When secondhanding, remember these three things: patience, persistence, and negotiation. With these three things in mind, eventually you’ll find everything you need secondhand.

Thanks again to Allie for sharing your story!
